We have spoken on various occasions about the consequences of the confinement of children at home in some provinces for more than 90 days. There have been emotional, physical, family and other consequences. In this article we will try to reveal some of the consequences, and sequels, which distance education has left in children and adolescents.

We will also tell you about the consequences it may have in children with special difficulties, or families without access to the Internet whose differences have been accentuated.

Children without socialization, one of the aftermath of distance education

Education is an affective and collective event, in which personal contact is an unavoidable ingredient that has not been replaced by distance education. Under a guise of progress, distance education can have a serious sequel: replacing direct interaction between teachers and students, as it would mean a very serious involution. Schools and institutes are places of learning, and spaces for socialization. Boys and girls express their emotions, shape their roles, acquire their personality in a group and individually. This socialization has not occurred during the confinement.

Not only has there been no socialization, but also the return has brought a different socialization, more distant and with more precautions, both in classrooms and in recreation, and when taking on group work. We are many, mothers who are interested in knowing what school relationships are going to be like from September.

It is expensive that this lack of socialization does not affect all ages equally. Up to 3 years of age, children do not need to interact as much with other children. They do not have cooperative play with other children, they do not benefit, or need it as much as the older ones. But from this age, a lack of social contact with equals sustained over time can end up generating a major malaise.

Aftermath of the economic inequalities of families

Distance or online education imposed by the closure of schools has also put in shows the inequalities of families in Spain. A recent study by the La Caixa Foundation concluded that confinement, therefore distance education, has widened the educational gap. It will affect the academic performance and cognitive skills of children from the poorest families, especially linguistic and mathematics.

There are many families of migrant parents who have been unable to help their children in school work. The language barrier, but also digital literacy or parental training, has motivated these children to encounter even more learning difficulties than if they had gone to class. This may have caused some to have dishangled from the education system.

On the other hand, and thinking about them, the professors, many of them talk about inconvenience or frustration when it comes to teaching the subjects. Pablo Campos Calvo-Sotelo, professor Universidad CEU San Pablo – insists that there is no technological tool or computer program capable of replacing the magic of looking into the eyes of a student and capturing his accomplice emotion.

Children and adolescents who have specific learning difficulties need adequate intervention . And this has not been possible to carry it out, in most cases, online. Without this support, these students can suffer consequences throughout their academic, work, economic or social life.

We refer to learning difficulties to neurobiological alterations that affect writing, reading or mathematical calculation, ranging from mild, moderate or severe degrees. The educational system in terms of the evaluation, identification and intervention of this group has not been efficient during distance education.

It is clear that the integral training process aims to build on values of a human being. It transcends to mere technical training. Therefore, the recurrence of virtual systems that have supported the drama of COVID-19, cannot be erected as a new educational paradigm.
