On December 14, World Monkey Day is celebrated with the purpose of conservation of its species and in order to respect the life of animals. They are funny animals, they live in herds and just like us, they also play, kiss, caress and even get bored… and the most surprising thing is that they share between 94 and 95% of the human genome.
It is estimated that there are up to 260 species of monkeys and that the first to appear came from Africa some 40 million years ago. The monkeys that have inhabited Asia and Africa are the so-called Old World Monkeys, and the monkeys that belong to America are the New World Monkeys.
Attractions about monkeys
If you want to know a little about the intelligence of monkeys you have to know that they are very smart and have a great intellectual ability similar to those of humans. Old World monkeys have brains and skulls much larger than those in the New World, reaching 40 to 200 grams.
But it does not mean that they are more or less intelligent by size, an example is the capuchin monkeys that have a small brain and are the most intelligent and skillful.
What is his physique like?
Knowing how to differentiate monkeys by the classification of their worlds is somewhat complicated, but you can use a small difference. One of the most outstanding features is its nose, American monkeys have very separate nostrils and sideways, while those from the Old World their nose twists down and is much less separated.
In addition, these Old World monkeys are much larger and more robust and their butt has bulging shapes and red, bluish or purple hues called ischiatic calluses. The Mandrel is one of them with these characteristics and is also the largest monkey that exists.
Another feature of all monkeys is that they all have fur and tail, although it can become small. The smallest species of monkey is the pygmy titi with a size of just 15 centimeters long.
What do monkeys feed on?
There are countless foods that can be included in the diet of a monkey. Among the typical foods we can note that they like nuts, fruits, leaves, vertebrate insects and invertebrates, eggs, tree bark, flowers, birds and small mammals, honey or roots.
The nose monkey eats fruit, but it has to be green fruit. Eating ripe fruit may cause stomach discomfort. Gelada monkey feeds only on grass and spends 60% of its time eating grass. Titi monkey feeds on the fluids emanating from trees such as sap, latex or resins.
Other curious features
New World monkeys usually stay climbed on trees, while Old World monkeys stay longer on the ground . Their habitat is usually in jungles or forests as they do not tolerate cold very well. Japanese macaque is the one that usually tolerates low temperatures and snow best.
They like to live always in company and their groups are usually made up of males, females and their offspring. As a rule, monkeys usually have 1 or 2 offspring. Aunts and tamarins can get to have 3 offspring per delivery.
There are monkeys that are howlers and you can hear its sound up to 3 kilometers around in the middle of the jungle. There are also very fast monkeys such as paws monkey or red monkey, which can run up to 55 kilometers per hour.
Their kinship with humans is surprising, because just as we like to feel kisses and hugs, they tickle, they can become depressed and know how to feel justice and come to communicate through gestures and signs.
